Initial reports seemed to indicate that Batman/Bruce Wayne would play very little or even no role at all in the show, instead focusing on a younger James Gordon as he climbs through the police ranks. It could have worked, potentially in a time before Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham as often depicted in the comics while he is away in training. This would leave Jim Gordon to go up against younger villains each week with an overall story arch across the season (imagine we got some Court of Owls or something bigger!).
But now Fox have released more information, suggesting Batman is back where he belong, as a key character in Gotham.
has the details, with FOX Entertainment’s Chairman Kevin Reilly stating that a young Bruce Wayne will be in the show, possibly even younger than we imaged:
We see Detective Gordon, before he’s a commissioner, all the characters you know, Bruce Wayne, the Penguin, all of them. It’s Gotham teetering on the edge, and we see what makes these characters become who they are, [like] Catwoman. It’s an operatic soap that has a slightly larger-than-life quality to it.
…we’re playing with [age] in casting… [Bruce will be a] young boy; my guess would be somewhere around 12.
Evidently we can expect not only Batman, but another origin story seeing a young Bruce murdered before his eyes and the path to eventually become the Dark Knight.
Further rumours from /Film
suggest the series might begin with a young James Gordon investigating the murder of Bruce’s parents. Although it’s an origin story we’ve all seen, it would be interesting to see them explore this in the pilot at a level of detail we haven’t seen before, especially if it moved beyond a single episode into a bigger arch. Joe Chill’s connection to Gotham mobs, or the less preferred story of his origin as the Joker.
As more information comes out we can also expect mentions of more characters, in this case Catwoman with surely more to come like Penguin, Riddler etc.
